Deciding between Synthetic Fiber and Human Hair

Synthetic fibers have come a long way over the years. The fibers being manufactured today are so realistic looking that wigs and hairpieces made with these fibers are opening up a whole new world to the hair loss community. Synthetic fiber wigs and pieces are an affordable alternative to their human hair counterparts. Synthetic wigs are great for those who like minimal styling because they are ready to wear out of the box. They are made with “memory curl” so even after washing (in cold water) it will return to the original hair pattern.

Even more exciting is the advancement of heat-resistant or “heat-friendly” synthetic fibers. These wigs & hairpieces can withstand higher temperatures than standard synthetic fibers. This allows you to safely style them with curling irons and blow dryers to change up your look while still saving on the cost (compared to human hair.)

Just as there are different types of synthetic fibers, there are different types of human hair, as well.
Check out some of the common human hair varieties used by most manufacturers here.

Human hair has many advantages over synthetic fiber. The most natural looking wigs & hairpieces will be made with 100% human hair. These styles can be treated just as you would your own hair; that includes depositing hair dye to match your desired color.

Whether you decide to go with synthetic, heat-resistant fiber, or human hair, at Lori’s Wigsite, you will find a large variety of styles and colors to choose from.

Buy a wig that fits properly.

Finding a wig that fits is key. Most people wear “average” sized wig caps, however, that may not be what works for you. In some cases, your head may be too small for a specific wig cap and it could bunch in spots or slide too easily off your head. Conversely, a wig that is too small for you could feel too tight or ride up which would be very uncomfortable for all day wear.

~ Cap sizes are primarily determined by the circumference measurement.

Please also note that all wigs can be adjusted to fit your needs. Wig caps will have Velcro tabs or plastic sizing hooks located in the back which can be tightened or loosened for fit. If your wig is still too large, you can secure it with bobby pins or additional combs or clips can be sewn in.

A perfectly fit wig cap can make all the difference in your confidence when wearing wigs.

Understanding Wig Density

Understanding wig density is crucial for choosing the perfect wig that meets your styling needs and preferences. Wig density refers to the amount of hair on the wig cap, expressed as a percentage. It indicates how thick or thin the hair on the wig will appear, affecting the overall look and feel. Higher density means more hair volume, while lower density results in a finer appearance.

Common Wig Density Levels

Below is a visual aid & details provided by Ellen Wille to explain the various levels of density and its appearance.

Light Density

  • Mimics natural hair that is fine or thin
  • Ideal for a natural, everyday look
  • Perfect for those seeking a subtle and realistic appearance

Light / Medium Density

  • Closer to the average head of hair
  • Provides a soft look with slightly more body for effortless styling
  • Provides a balanced look suitable for any occasion

Medium Density

  • Closest to the average head of hair
  • Offers a natural look with enough volume for versatile styling
  • Gives a fuller, slightly thicker look

Medium/Heavy Density

  • Provides a fuller, more voluminous appearance
  • Suitable for styles requiring more body and thickness
  • Ideal for creating voluminous hairstyles with impact

Heavy Density

  • Delivers the maximum volume
  • Perfect for dramatic, glamorous styles
  • Great for those who want the fullest, most luxurious hair

Density and Fiber Type:

Wig density will remain consistent regardless of fiber, which means technique will help make the hair appear more or less dense. Another factor to keep in mind will be the cap construction. Hand Tied areas will always look more natural and not so dense since those hairs are hand tied into the base. Whereas wefted areas will have a higher concentration of hair in that area so they tend to look fuller.

Choosing the right wig density is essential for achieving your desired look. Whether you prefer a natural, everyday style or a more voluminous look, understanding wig density will help you make the best choice. We hope this guide helps you find the perfect wig that suits your style and needs.

Choosing Your Color

Another decision to make when shopping for a new wig or hairpiece is color. Alternative hair allows you to augment your usual color with highlights or lowlights. You could even use this opportunity to change your color altogether.

We understand choosing a color virtually can be difficult. Everyone's monitors are different and that can affect how the color looks from one screen to the next. Lighting also makes a difference, whether the professional lights of a studio, your own indoor lighting, or natural sunlight, alternative hair colors can be a challenge to match exactly to your own hair. Rest assured, we are committed to helping you find the right color that works best for you.

Wig Cap Liners are the fastest way to keep hair tucked.

Wig cap liners are by far one of the best tools to have for wig wearers. These nylon caps secure the natural hair so the wig can sit properly on top.

Wrap your hair around your head and pin it in place if you have medium to longer hair. Cover your hair with the cap liner and this will allow a smooth look underneath the wig.

Clean your wig regularly.

Not many people understand the importance of washing a wig. Wigs are exposed to the elements just as human hair, so it helps to refresh them. Cleaning and caring for your wigs is easier than you might think and all wigs will come with detailed washing instructions. Your investment is worth preserving and by regularly washing your wigs, you’ll make them last much longer.

Understanding Price

Price will determine what options you will be able to choose from and help narrow down your choice. A wig or hairpiece isn't just hair - it's an investment that can increase your confidence.

There are many different factors that calculate the price of a wig or hairpiece. First & foremost will be the hair type. Synthetic Fiber and Heat-Resistant Fiber will be more affordable than wigs & hairpieces made with 100% Human Hair. Even the specific type of human hair can result in a fluctuation of cost. For example, Remy Human Hair still has the cuticle intact, and all hairs will be in the same direction resulting in strong, smooth hair that will not tangle. This method for handling Remy human hair is more expensive by comparison to the standard acquisition of human hair in large bundles. Those large bundles are gathered without concern for direction and then must be processed to remove the cuticle to avoid matting.

Another factor that influences price is cap construction. A hand-tied wig will be much more costly than a machine-made wig. The process of hand-tying is very delicate and time-consuming as the wigmaker will sew one or two hairs into the cap and double knot it to ensure a secure attachment. Some wigs will have hand-tied tops with machine-made sides & back to reduce the cost.

For Human Hair wigs & hairpieces, cost can also be affected by the hair length. The longer the hair, the more expensive the wig will be.

Explore the possibilities

Whatever the reason you’re looking for a new wig, approach the process with optimism and excitement! A new wig can create a new you – to whatever extent you desire! When looking for a new wig, consider a subtle change in length or color, or go for a drastic change. The choice is yours!

There are several things to think about when looking for a new style. For starters, check out what’s trending by scrolling social media or by talking with your hairdresser. You may also want to consider the time of the year. For the colder seasons, you may want to let your hair flow long to your shoulders or beyond. Long hair trends may include layers that frame your face or drape over one side of your forehead. Parting your locks on the side is a must to boost volume and style.

When the weather starts to warm up, you may opt for shorter hairstyles. A short haircut can look edgy, but it can also look clean and well put together. To get that perfect balance between the two, go for longer layers on top that can be neatly tucked behind the ears with bobby pins and accessories or just as easily tossed into messy waves with a bit of product.

One great benefit to wearing a wig is the versatility and ease with which you can sample trends that may seem like a frightening commitment when done to your natural hair. Use your wigs to your advantage! The search for a new wig can be a fun experience if you bring along a playful attitude and a loving & honest friend. Whatever decisions you make, have fun and love yourself!
